Abstract
FR.07.04 Aging Lens  New concepts for lens aging Dawczynski J., Strobel J. Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Jena Epidemiological changes within the next decades cause an increase of the world population and of life expectance. These changes lead to an increase of age correlated lens opacities and cataract. Respecting the economic dimensions of cataract intensive research activities investigating the underlying mechanism become more and more important. Beside the known risk factors oxidative damaging processes are more in the focus now. Typically changes of the old lens are caused by a failure of protective systems of the lens and an accumulation of metabolic end-products and their influence on light transmission. Advanced glycation end-products and their potential inhibition seem to play a key role.
