Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland Objective: The aim of the study was to estimate effectivity of aqueous deficiency dry eye treatment with Form Fit® intracanalicular plugs. Methods: 15 patients (30 eyes, 13 women, 2 man) aged 38-73 years (mean 54.7) was qualified to intracanalicular plugs implantation. All the patients were treated topically with tear film supplements in maximum doses because of dry eye syndrome. The Schirmer I test was below 5mm once a month through 3 months. The ocular surface and tears secretion diagnostic were performed before plugs implantation. Mean Schirmer I test before implantation was 2.7mm. Intracanalicular plugs were implanted in local anesthesia with 1% Pantocaine solution after tear duct irrigation with 2ml 0.9% NaCl. The observation period was 6 months, including control visits after 7 days, one month, three months and six months after the implantation. After implantation patients were still treated with artificial tears, which reduced doses accordingly to ocular surface stability. Results: All the patients presented improvement in ocular surface stability. Mean Schirmer I test was 5.7mm after 7 days, 5.93mm after one month, 7.0mm after three months, 8.1mm after six months. The corneal fluorescein staining was reduced or eliminated, also the epithelial desquamation performed in confocal microscopy. The contrast sensitivity was better after intracanalicular implantation. The subjective feelings were reduced in 7 days after implantation, all the patients declared better life quality. Bacterial conjunctivitis in one eye as a complication was observed 2 months after the plug implantation, which was successfully treated with local antibiotic therapy. Conclusions: The treatment with Form Fit intracanalicular plugs in aqueous deficiency dry eye syndrome is safe and effective method leaded to patientsÂ’ better life quality.
