FR.06.16 Helmholtz and Coleman theories of accommodation against the background of a permanent presbyopia correction Stachs O., Berger E., Guthoff R. F. Augenklinik, Universität Rostock Objective: To date, pseudophakic accommodation has been achieved by an axial shift of the IOL optic. This shift of the IOL optic occurs when the ciliary muscle contracts and is based on different accommodation theories (Helmholtz, Coleman). The purpose of the study is the discussion of booth theories based on pharmacological induced objective measurements of biometric changes of the anterior segment of young vitrectomized and non-vitrectomized phakic eyes. Methods: Both eyes of 5 unilaterial vitrectomized phakic patient aged between 20 and 35 years was measured 4 weeks postoperatively using AC-Master (Zeiss) and pharmacological induced accommodation. Changes in anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and the posterior pole was analysed and compared with a control group. Results: The accommodative changes of the vitrectomized and the non- vitrectomized phakic eyes of the investigated patients are comparible. There are no differences compared with the control group Conclusions: In case of a vitrectomized eye and the assumption of Coleman’s theory of accommodation should exist no or altered changes in lens shape during accommodation. We have found no differences between vitrectomized and the non-vitrectomized phakic eyes. Thus the vitreous has a second rate during accommodation and the theory of accommodation should be discussed critically.
