Abstract
SO.06.03 Vessel wall/lumen ratio of the retinal arteries in patients with arterial hypertension Harazny J.1, Scibor M.1, Schlaich M.2, Ott C.2, Schmieder R. E.2, Michelson G.1 1Augenklinik, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen-Nürnberg; 2Medizinische Klinik IV (Nephrologie und Hypertensiologie), Universitätsklinikum Erlangen-Nürnberg Objective: To evaluate of the vessel wall/lumen ratio (GLR) of the retinal arteries in patients with arterial hypertension. Methods: The vessel and the lumen diameter of the retinal arteries were determined by Heidelberg Retina Flowmetry. The vessel diameter (GD) was determined by the reflected laser light (DC-Image) and the vessel lumen diameter (LD) was estimated by laser Doppler shift (Flow-Image) (software: AFFPIA-SLDF V3.6). The vessel wall index (GWI) contains information of the vessel wall thickness and the erythrocyte free plasma stream: GWI=(GD-LD)/2. The vessel wall/lumen ratio is the ratio of the vessel wall index and the lumen diameter: GLR =GWI*2 / LD. GLR could be a index for the vascular remodelling in arterial hypertension. All persons were male. Two groups with arterial hypertension (H) and 2 control groups (K) from the Ophthalmology Dept. (A) and of the Medical Dept. 4 (Nephrology and Hypertensiology) (M) of the university of Erlangen were examined: H-(M) n=34, age=45±17 years.; H-(A) n=83, age=54±6 years.; K-(M) n=18, age=27±4 years.; K-(A) n=142, age=52±11years. Patients with diabetes and clinical signs of arteriosclerosis were excluded from the control and hypertension groups. Patients with arterial hypertension were under treatment. Results: The GLR in the hypertension group was not different in comparison with the control (0.34±0.14 versus 0.33±0.12 p=0.86). Subjects over an age of 40 years showed a significantly higher GLR (+13%) than persons under 40 years of age (0.34±0.13 versus 0.30±0.12 p=0.004). The GLR of the two control groups and the two hypertension groups did not differ. There was a significant linear correlation between age and GLR (r=0.16, p=0.005) in all examined persons. Conclusions: The vessel wall/lumen ratio of retinal arteries increased significantly with age. Patients with treated arterial hypertension did not show any changes in the GLR in comparison with age adapted controls.
