Universitäts-Augenklinik Heidelberg Visual rehabilitation of low vision patients is of increasing importance especially in the western countries due to the demographic change with an increasing number of elderly people. Following all therapeutic options to recover eye diseases, only optimal and comprehensive prescription of low vision aids will regain independence and quality of live. The most important aim in these patients is reconstitution of reading ability. This is reached by complete diagnostic and adequate adjustment of optical and electronical low vision aids. In patients with large central retinal pathology fundus-controlled function testing helps to evaluate the location and stability of fixation and training might be helpful. Prescription of LVAs requires practice and comprehensive explanation of the limited field of view and reduced working distance.
