Objective: Anti-VEGF therapy has become an often applied therapeutic approach to neovascular AMD. Aim of this interventional case series is to identify subgroups that respond above average to intravitreal therapy with bevacizumab.
Methods: In this interventional case series 220 patients with neovascular AMD received at least one intravitreal injection of 1,0 mg bevacizumab. The course was documented by ETDRS visual acuity , OCT, fluorescence angiography as well as fundusphotography.
Results: Minimally classic as well as predominantly classic CNV showed a tendency towards results rather above average. Retinal Angiomatous Proliferation (RAP) also responded to treatment with intravitreal bevacizumab above average. Patients, that received therapy within 15 weeks after noticing deterioration of sight had the best prognosis for their visual acuity.
Conclusions: The success of bevacizumab-based therapy seems to vary for distinct forms of neovascular AMD. Especially early lesions seem to have a better outcome after therapy with intravitreal bevacizumab.
