Optical coherence tomography findings in macular epiretinal membranes

Lang G. E.
Augenklinik, Universitätsklinikum Ulm

Glial proliferation on the retina results in epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation leading to distortion of the macular vessels. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a tool that provides high-resolution images of the macula and improves the diagnosis of ERM. It produces reliable, reproducible images and allows to characterize different parameters of ERM. Typical OCT findings are clearly delineated hyperreflective bands on the inner surface of the retina, traction of the ERM, focal ERM adhesions, loss of foveal depression, secondary cystoid macular edema, detachment of the ERM and pseudoholes. OCT findings contribute to the understanding of underlying mechanisms of ERM formation and progression. They help with the proper diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of patients with ERM.
