Abstract
FR.10.05 New therapeutic concepts for dry eye: sex steroids. What is the role of hormone replacement therapy in dry eye? Schirra F. Klinik für Augenheilkunde, Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes, Homburg/Saar Dry eye is a frequently occurring, complex alteration of the functional unit of dry eye and ocular surface, which predominantly affects women. Increasing knowledge on a molecular level and epidemiological data demonstrate a close relationship between occurrence and progression of dry eye in one hand and sex steroids on the other. In fact, it has been found that the control of the relevant tissues and organs is a major task of this group of hormones. Given this background, hormone replacement therapy should be re-evaluated. Conversely, these findings lay the foundations for new general therapeutic approaches for dry eye, which are also beeing presented.
