DO.13.05 Pathology and clinical significance of peripheral retinal degenerations Meyer P. Universitäts-Augenklinik Basel Peripheral retinal degenerations are commen lesions, the majority of them being clinically insignificant. This report rewiews macroscopical and microscopical features of these peripheral lesions. Based on current literature the lesions are classified according to their aetiology in either malformations, dystrophic or traktive degenerate conditions. Peripheral degenerations such as lattice degeration, zystic or zonular tractional tufts or degenerativ retinoschisis can predispose to the development of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. As of yet, randomised studies evaluating prophylactic treatment, with laser and cryocoagulation, of peripgheral retinal degenerations are lacking. There is therefore much controversy regarding decision of prophylactic treatment. Most of the peripheral retinal degenerations may not require treatment except in high-risk situations.
