Rather harmonized educational programs for training ophthalmologists and for continuing medical education in ophthalmology are relatively well established in some areas of the world. In Europe training programs to become a certified ophthalmologist vary widely from country to country, even form institution to institution. One attempt to overcome this diversity is the examination of the European Board of Ophthalmologists (EBO), which gives the certification as Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO). However this examination is not yet widely accepted throughout Europe.
One goal of the panel discussion is to find ways to harmonize educational programs and examinations in Europe.
Similarly, preferred practice patterns (=therapeutic guidelines) are well established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). In Europe eventually different organisations in each country develop their own therapeutic guidelines.
Another goal of the panel discussion is to find ways to improve and to enforce guidelines in ophthalmology on a supranational basis. |
